(If you do not know which gender your new baby will be, you can just say "the baby".)  Where I would suggest a page break, I have double-spaced.  I suggest adding photos or drawing pictures, and that in most of them your child be the center of attention (i.e., other people in the picture looking at/smiling at/interacting with him/her).

[Your child's name]’S NEW BABY [BROTHER or SISTER]

Once there was a beautiful baby named [your child's name] who was born to a very lucky Mommy and Daddy.

As time went on, [your child's name] grew and grew.

[He or She] learned to walk, and talk, and do lots of things that grownups do.
[your child's name] was growing and learning and changing all the time.
[He or She] was growing from a baby, to a toddler, to a big [girl or boy].
But [your child's name] wasn’t the only one who was changing.

One day, Mommy’s belly started to get bigger.

People told [your child's name], “You are going to have a baby [brother or sister].”
Mommy told [your child's name] that a baby was growing inside her belly, and that baby would be [your child's name]'s new [brother or sister].
Over the months, Mommy’s belly got even bigger.
It got so big that her lap started to get smaller!

It got so big that she had a hard time keeping up with [your child's name]!

Then one day it was time for [your child's name]’s baby [brother or sister] to be born.

Daddy took Mommy to the hospital so the doctor could help her.  [If you have solid plans on who will watch your child while this is going on, you can insert them here.]

After the baby was born, [your child's name] and Daddy went to visit Mommy in her hospital room.

Soon a nurse brought in [your child's name]’s baby [brother or sister].
[She or He] was very tiny.

That night [your child's name] and Daddy went home while Mommy and the baby stayed in the hospital.

The next day, [your child's name] and Daddy brought Mommy and [your child's name]'s [brother or sister] home.

When the baby came home, [your child's name] found out that babies cry a lot, and eat a lot, and sleep a lot, and they need their diapers changed a lot.

[your child's name] learned that there were lots of things [he or she] could do to help Mommy and Daddy with [his or her] baby [sister or brother].

“This baby is so lucky to have you for a [sister or brother]!” said Mommy and Daddy.  “[He or She] will learn so many things from you!”

[your child's name] showed his [brother or sister] how the toys on [his or her] bouncer seat worked.  And how to wind the mobile to play music.  But the baby was still too little to do the things [your child's name] could do.

Mommy and Daddy said “Little babies can’t do much, but when your [brother or sister] gets older you can play together.

“And help each other.  And learn new things together.

“Be good to each other, and you will be friends forever.”

[your child's name] looked at [his or her] baby [brother or sister].

Right now [he or she] was still too little to play.
Then [her or his] baby [brother or sister] looked back at him...and smiled!
“Well,” thought [your child's name], “that is a start!”
And it was a start - it was just the beginning!

Same book in Second Person:

YOUR NEW BABY [BROTHER or SISTER]

You are getting bigger!  You are growing and learning and changing all the time.
You have grown from a baby, to a toddler, to a big kid.
But you aren't the only one who is changing.

Mommy’s belly is getting bigger.

A baby is growing there, and that baby will be your new brother or sister.
Over the months, Mommy’s belly will get so big that her lap might get smaller!

Mommy might have trouble keeping up with you!

When the time comes for
your
baby [brother or sister] to be born, your
Mommy will go to the hospital so the doctor can help her.  [If you have solid plans on who will watch your child while this is going on, you can insert them here.]

When the baby comes home, you will see how tiny new babies are.  You will find out that babies cry a lot, and eat a lot, and sleep a lot, and they need their diapers changed a lot.

You can do lots of things to help Mommy and Daddy with your baby [sister or brother].

“This baby is so lucky to have you for a [sister or brother]!” say Mommy and Daddy.  “[He or She] will learn so many things from you!”

You can show your baby [brother or sister] how the toys on [his or her] bouncer seat work.  And you can read [him or her] a story.  But a new baby will be too little to do all the things that you can do.

Mommy and Daddy say “Little babies can’t do much, but when your [brother or sister] gets older you can play together.

“And help each other.  And learn new things together.

“Be good to each other, and you will be friends forever.”

As you look at your baby [brother or sister], you can see that
[he or she] is still too little to play.
But one day soon, your baby [brother or sister] will look at you...and smile!
And that is a wonderful start!
